The sector's new minister Nick Hurd - but what will be his title?

Conservative Nick Hurd is to be the minister responsible for social enterprise under the Conservative/LibDem government.

Hurd who held the shadow position from October 2008 has often proclaimed his personal support for social enterprise, including in April’s Social Enterprise magazine.

He is also a strong supporter of social investment, telling this publication that the Conservative plans for a Big Society wholesale bank would be a top priority.

It is not yet clear what his official title will be. However, it is extremely unlikely to be ‘third sector’ minister.

The Office of the Third Sector website has been taken down from the Cabinet Office’s internet site and information about social enterprise can now be reached through a link titled ‘voluntary sector’.

Hurd, who is a father of four, spent most of his adult life running a business until following in the footsteps of his father, former foreign secretary Douglas Hurd, and entering politics as member for Ruislip-Northwood in May 2005. Hurd increased his majority at this election.

Hurd’s office this morning confirmed the appointment but was unable to provide further information at this early stage. Hurd was unavailable for comment.

The official announcement is expected later today.
