Five strategies for graduate recruitment

In the competitive recruitment, market graduates are going out and finding the companies they want to apply for, be it by traditional or technological means.

Social enterprise has been making headlines as an alternative business model for public services both in the UK and around the world. Furthermore, modern graduates are increasingly inclined to value the social and environmental impact of a business, and not just how much they’ll get paid.

So how can cash-strapped social enterprises compete for the best talent? Caroyln Wensley of Net Impact, shares five methods that can be used to tap into the growing pool of graduate talent.

 

International sustainable business consultancy Net Impact are running a social enterprise masterclass called 'Sending your social enterprise into the stratosphere' on Wednesday 13 October. It is being held at the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre in central London at 6.30pm (entrance £10 to £20).

1. Approach Universities that offer programmes on social enterprise
In the UK there are several institutions from top tier universities offering MBAs and practical learning programmes on social entrepreneurship. To recruit graduates via universities establish relationships with the student clubs, career centers and the relevant departments by offering mentoring, work experience or opportunities for thesis research or case studies. 
 
2. Professional networking and attending social enterprise events 
By aligning yourself with groups of people who share the same outlook, you can improve your business outreach. Professional networks that organise events within the realm of social enterprise are in need of speakers, and in return as a speaker one can receive free marketing by being mentioned in the promotional material for the event, and at the event itself. This may allow you to meet potential job candidates. 
 
3. Harness the power of social media 
There are various free social media tools that by creating a business profile can increase your marketing scope instantly and target a larger audience at a click of a few buttons. For example: Twitter, Facebook, blog freeware, you tube and establishing RSS feeds to LinkedIn. Using social media tools is a time investment, you need to be willing to create a community that people want to be a part of and by doing so you are creating a more effective and efficient drive for word-of-mouth.
 
4. Get interviewed and published
Newspapers today offer both written and electronic forms of news media that can generate publicity and act as a silent endorsement. Get interviewed by reputable bloggers, participate in live Q & A sessions, and write features on an area of personal or business interest.
 
5. Establish a web presence 
Use search engines and incorporate social media platforms to establish your web presence. It is important to use the key words in your web content to appeal to the target market as this will help with appearing in the results of search engines. Some search engines post websites for free and also enable analytical tracking of how many visitors have looked at the website, where they came from and how long they stayed, providing a valuable insight into your target audience.
 
In the competitive recruitment market graduates are going out and finding the companies they want to apply for by using professional and social networks, be it by traditional or technological means which are familiar to them. Graduates look to potential employers for interaction and engagement. While these methods may come across as somewhat simple, understanding the key difference between using them and knowing when and how to use them more than as a promotional and communication channel is vital to attract the growing pool of talent.
